Karajan Conference Keynote in Graz, Austria

I am very pleased to be invited to be a keynote speaker at the international interdisciplinary conference Herbert von Karajan and the Interpretation of Music to take place 29 April to 1 May 2019 in Graz, Austria. [ Programme Booklet ]

The organisers describe the aims of the conference:
In order to confront the phenomenon of “musical interpretation” as comprehensively as possible, the event aims to provide a platform for bringing together a wide variety of disciplines and perspectives to explore and broaden the field of interpretation research.

In line with the underlying project (funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF) Towards Interdisciplinary, Computer Assisted Analysis of Musical Interpretation: Herbert von Karajan (karajan-research.org), the conference will particularly focus on innovative and computer-assisted approaches to interpretation research.

By connecting traditional methods of historical musicology, musical performance studies, and music-psychological questions (among other disciplines), the conference will expand our understanding of Karajan’s interpretations in particular, and how conductors shape music in general and how we experience it.

In addition to traditional presentation formats (presentations, book presentations, poster sessions), the conference will feature unusual formats such as coding workshops and a live concert with simultaneous algorithmic music analysis. We also plan to publish selected contributions in a conference proceedings.

The event is co-hosted by the Institute for Composition, Music Theory, Music History, and Conducting and the Institute Oberschützen of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, in cooperation with project partners, including the Eliette and Herbert von Karajan Institute Salzburg, the Mozarteum Salzburg, Johannes Kepler Univeristy Linz, and the Anton Bruckner Private University Linz.
