The International Conference on Future Breakthroughs in Science and Society I was deeply honored to serve alongside eminent colleagues as part of the jury for this year's Falling Walls Lab, which took place 8 November 2017 at Die Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts) by the Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate) in Berlin, Germany. 100 contestants were selected from 68 preliminary competitions taking place in countries around the world, and each had 3 minutes to present their work. I was blown away by their creativity, passion, and enthusiasm.

Falling Walls Lab - Livestream - Wednesday, 08 November

The Falling Walls Lab Jury was chaired by Claudie Haigneré, the first European woman in space. Other members of the panel were: Françoise Baylis, Canada Research Chair in Bioethics and Philosophy; Michael Conrad, President of the Berlin School of Creative Leadership; Stefan Ferber, Senior VP Engineering at Bosch, a sponsor of the event; Carl-Henrik Heldin, Chairman of the Nobel Foundation Board; Tom Hunt of X (formerly known as Google[x]); Johanna Mair, Professor of Organisation, Strategy, and Leadership at the Hertie School of Governance; Joybrato Mukherjee, VP of DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service; William Phillips, Nobel prize (physics) laureate, currently at the National Institute of Standards and Technology; Joe Speicher, ED of Autodesk Foundation; Sven Wagner, VP Business Development at Sartorius; and, Lian Willetts, postdoc at the University of Alberta and Falling Walls Young Innovator 2015.

Just before the lunch break, participants and attendees stood behind the sign, "Alternative Facts Stop Here," the motto of Falling Walls Berlin 2017.

The next day, I attended the Falling Walls Conference, participated in a "Braindate" with Adam Levy, Multimedia Editor at Nature and host of this year's Falling Walls Livestream, and a Dark Knowledge breakout session organised by Die Zeit & Zeit Online.
